How to round numbers?

A) To round to nearest tenth, hundredth or thousandth:

  • if the rounding digit is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, simply drop all digits to the right of it.
  • if the rounding digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, add one to the rounding digit and drop all digits to the right of it.

Example 1. What is 80.945 rounded to the nearest tenth?
Ans. 80.9

Example 2. What is 18.386 rounded to the nearest hundredth?
Ans. 18.39

B) To round to nearest one, ten, hundred, thousand and so on:

  • if the rounding digit is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, change all digits to the right of it to zeroes.
  • if the rounding digit is 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, add one to the rounding digit and change all digits to the right of it to zeroes.

Example 3. What is 871 rounded to the nearest ten?
Ans. 870

Example 4. What is 121,580 rounded to the nearest thousand?
Ans. 122,000
